Romano Runner up in NASCAR Modified Championship

Romano_4.jpgNik Romano Second in NASCAR Whelen All American Modifieds Championship at Stockton

ANTHERTON, CA- 21 year old Nik Romano had a successful 2012 season racing in the NASCAR Whelen All American Modifieds presented by Star Racing Supply at Stockton 99 Speedway. Romano had put his No. 4 Fremont Plastic Surgery Modified second in the championship points with consistent finishes. In 20 starts, Romano has collected seven top threes, eleven top fives and seventeen top tens. Majority of the 20 races were full of cars and division veterans. Even though, Romano didn't get any wins this year proved that consistent finishes matter in the championship.

Med__4_K_N_Mod.jpgThis is Romano's fifth year in the Ron Sutton's Winner's Circle program, which develops drivers for a career in motorsports after an extensive application and tryout process. Romano joined the program in 2008 when he began in Formula Fords before advancing to USAC Focus Midgets, NASCAR Modifieds and Late Models. Romano is no stranger to racing asphalt oval circuits in California. Romano has collected six wins, Rookie of the Year and a Championship in Formula Fords. Two Wins, Rookie of the Year and a Championship in USAC Focus Midget. Two wins and Rookie of the Year in NASCAR Modifieds 2010. A win and a 3rd place championship in the NASCAR Late Models at Irwindale Speedway.

This past weekend, Romano ran the last two races of the 2012 year at Stockton 99 Speedway. Nik qualified eighth with a time of 14.276, nearly holding teammate Keegan Walmer in ninth by .022 seconds. 

In the first 40 lap main event Romano started eighth and avoided a few early wrecks had him in the fifth spot by lap eight. Running behind Walmer and the lead pack Romano ran smooth lines. Nik ran solid in fifth for the rest of the race.

An invert of eight was drawn for the division from the first main finished placed Nik fourth on the grid. Romano had a great run on the start and moved into third by turn one. Romano was eager for good positions and as long as he can keep the division points leader Winters behind him. A caution was thrown on lap five and Romano lost third and fell back to fourth to battle with Winters. Another yellow on lap eight occurred which add more challenges for Romano to keep defending Winters. Romano and Winters put on a great battle for fourth till lap 15 Winters was able to beat Romano to the line. On lap 19, the second place runner spun in turn one collected Romano and a few other drivers. Tough luck for Romano has he suffered some damages and had to restart at the rear of the pack. In the last half of the race Romano muscled his way up to 11th and ran out of laps to pick up more positions.
